The school year here in South America runs opposite of the states, in line with the seasons. This means that the girls are on a break from school starting on December 20th until the first of March. Timing is perfect – the rainy season in Cusco is underfoot; indoor activities include dance lessons, team building games and holiday card crafting.
We program managers also get a break during this time, so the last weeks are full of despididas – going away festivities as we bid goodbye to the year and wish the groups a very merry vacation. The Casa Mantay and Los Nogales girls got to spend their last days at the pool, a fun break for all from daily class.
Some of the girls will be returning to the program next year, but others will start at different schools. We chose to recognize their participation with certificates thanking the girls for their efforts and commemorating the year. Mixed with Christmas festivities, we are able to wrap up here in Cusco on a celebratory note. From Christmas cookie decorating and English lessons involving traditional carols, small gifts of ornaments and stickers, and active photos of the girls playing sports, each girl received a token of our appreciation for their involvement with GirlSportWorks.
We’re looking forward to hitting the ground running upon our return in March. Until then, Feliz Navidad and best wishes for a safe holiday season!
