In Cusco, summer vacation is coming to an end, and Kyla and I are very excited to kick off the new year.
During our break, we have had time to reflect on our experiences, and we wanted to share some of our favorite memories so far.
We arrived in Cusco in July. We had a thorough orientation from Alika and Lydia but, because of the teacher strike, we did not have class. We used the time to explore Cusco, prepare for the school year, and acclimate to the Andes.
We started classes in August and had a blast getting to know the students from all five of our schools.
In September, we had a fun time on our first paseo with Casa Mantay at the Choco Museo. Kyla and I also went to Rainbow Mountain and climbed up to 5000 meters (15,000 feet).
In October, all the girls came to our house learn about healthy eating habits, and we made vegetarian pizzas and fruit salad! We enjoyed getting to know the girls off the sports court.
In November, we got World Cup fever and celebrated with our chicas and the rest of Peru when the national team qualified for the World Cup for the first time in 36 years!
December flew by so quickly! The Peruvian Government put on a race to promote healthy living, and Kyla and I ran our first 10k at altitude. We also celebrated the end of the school year with some fun relay race competitions. We said goodbye to the amazing 6th graders as they graduated from our program.
Summer Vacation (January and February)
There is nothing better than “summer” vacation in January! We both adventured in Patagonia in Chile and explored more of Peru. The highlight for both of us was going to NYC for a weekend to celebrate GirlSportWorks’ 15-year anniversary and meet the rest of the GSW family.
