Cusco: The Return

There’s no denying it: the new school year is in full swing.

Students have bought their school supplies, teachers have prepared their syllabi, and GirlSportWorks has launched another year of sports and life skills classes.

The start of a new school year is both exhilarating and chaotic. It’s a time of new beginnings, of fresh opportunities, and of high enthusiasm levels. For us project managers, it’s a chance to introduce new students to our classes, reunite with returning students, and tweak our program to make it better than ever.

Adrie and I returned from our “summer” holiday feeling refreshed, reenergized, and determined to make the most of our remaining time here in Cusco. The start of the new semester has provided the perfect chance to pause and reflect on our Cusco experience. Comparing our recent return to when we first arrived in Cusco highlights the ways in which we’ve changed and grown over the months. We arrived in July excited but nervous, unsure of what Cusco had in store for us. We knew very little and had lots to learn about our new environment and job. Our first five months were all about adjusting—to the altitude, to a new country, and to being project managers.

Fast forward to March 2019, and our arrival in Cusco felt more like returning home.

While we enjoyed our vacation, we couldn’t wait to come back to Cusco and reunite with our students, our friends, and our favorite restaurants. Our time away from Cusco allowed us to see our lives from a new perspective and realize how well we’ve come to know the city and be comfortable in our roles here. While there will always continue to be growth opportunities, we’re no longer novices learning the ropes.

Planning for the new school year means that we can take all that we learned last year and apply it to these coming months. In particular, the end of year interviews we conducted provided us with valuable insights into how GirlSportWorks can continue to evolve to better serve our students and their families. We’re starting off 2019 full of ideas and excitement about all that we hope to achieve before we leave in July. We know these months will fly by, and we fully intend to make the most of them. ¡Vamos!

Hasta luego,
Danielle
