Update from Margie – El Día del Estudiante

It’s been a full first month since I joined Jamie here at the end of September. With the GirlSportWorks team complete, we jumped right into planning for El Día del Estudiante at Colegio Pacca. This day honors students everywhere and celebrates the nation’s youth. We had originally planned to join the celebration and contribute a few treats, however, it soon became clear that the teachers hoped we would plan a day full of relay and sport activities for the girls. And so it was. Much to the amusement of passersby en route to the school, we awkwardly carried a large piñata, the candy to go in it, and an overflowing bag of sports balls and cones. We split the group of students, consisting of the older girls as well as some younger girls returning for the fun, into teams of six with a teacher leading each one. It was a challenge to manage the 50 or so girls at once – and get them through all the games – but the giggles and squeals heard across the field told us all was going well. The day culminated in a game of musical chairs and piñata wacking on the main patio, resulting in a pile of girls going after candy. Success.
